“Waiting for perfect means not starting.”
That’s the closing line of yesterday’s blog post from Seth Godin, and BOY did it hit home for me.
We have this idea that there will be a “perfect” time to start some endeavor whether it be a new project, business life/diet/health change. We put off starting because we’re convinced that there is some perfect future time to start on that, but that perfect time is NOT right now. Endless “reasons” for why we have to wait to start can be made and found but the truth is, there is no perfect future time. The time, is now.
Realizing that we’re actually doing this, putting off something that we say is important to us, is the first step to breaking that habit! The second step is to take action and let’s start with the mental talk that’s likely trying to pull your attention from even finishing this blog post. It’s telling you all those reasons why you’re completely right for not having started. We impose this unrealistic expectation on ourselves that we’re supposed to do all the things, and do them right the first time, in addition to completing all tasks and chores asked or expected of us. Well, that’s just plain ridiculous! We’re not perfect. We can’t be expected (or more pointedly put, we can’t expect ourselves) to do all the things OR do them perfectly. We don’t have to do it all at once. Let’s embrace the baby steps.
So, I’ll ask you. Would you rather be a doer with some baby steps or a waiter forever?

But at least you’re doing it.
Once you’re doing it, you have a chance to do it better.
Waiting for perfect means not starting.
